We rallied Challenger School to support
227 soldiers!!!

Through our letters to our classmates and friends, we were able to support all of these soldiers, and even had a very special visit from one of them! We are proud to have made a difference in these soldiers' lives!

Dear Challenger Teacher, In order to make a positive change for our great country, our class has decided to help support troops through the organization, anysoldier.com. This organization sends letters and care packages to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who receive little support from friends and family. It is our goal that Challenger School adopts 175 soldiers to write to and possibly send small care packages to as well. We need your help! You have been chosen by the student whose letter is attached to this message because they believe that you will help them reach our goal and participate in this service project. Change SCHOOL!

In September and October, we worked to make BIG CHANGES in the place where we spend most of our day! CHALLENGER SCHOOL is a great place to go, but we worked tirelessly to make it even better!

Clean Up Challenger Day! Alma and Tomi put on this event to make Challenger a more beautiful place to learn! More than 13 homerooms participated in the day long clean up, right before election day was held at our school!

Challenger Top 5 Reward Party: Rico, Vicente, and Rey created certificates and a reward party to recognize the top 5 students in each grade. They wanted to make sure that these students recieved recognition and also continued to be good leaders making positive choices.

Dear Ms. Molina and Ms. Birrell Hi, our names are Rey Flores, Rico Anaya Perez, and Vicente Araiza. We are writing to you to convince you to let us have a Halloween party for five kids in each grade who are being good. We want to have the Halloween party during the school day. It will change the school by making kids pay attention and do their work in class. We will make the project happen by working hard. This is important to us because we want to check how many students pay attention during classes and if they don’t pay attention they will not get to go to the Halloween party. It will change the school by making kids pay attention and do their work in class. The kids that don’t pay attention will not get to go to the party .If they don’t do their work they will not be allowed to go. If they have more than 5 assignments missing they will not get to go. If they get more than 3 detentions they will not go. We are going to let the teachers from every grade pick 5 students from their class. We will make the project happen by working hard. We will write a letter to the adults that can help us. We will buy the stuff that we will need for the project. We will start decorating so it could look nice. We will help with every thing so it can look really nice. This is important to us because we want to check how many students pay attention during classes and if they don’t pay attention they will not go to the Halloween party on October 31. Challenger Cooking Class! Janet led over 60 Challenger students, with the help of Ms. Gorzen, in learning how to cook! 3 seperate cooking classes were held to teach Challenger students to cook.

Dear Ms. Molina and Ms. Birrell, My name is Janet Mondragon and I am a student at challenger school. I am writing about my change the school project, and to tell you what my project is. I want to have a cooking class. I am going to open a cooking class on Oct 21st. I will tell you this will change the school, how I will make my project, and why this is important to me to happen. How will this change the school? Students would have the chance to learn how to cook. Some students have younger brothers or sisters they have to take care of them and they have to make them food. It would help them in many ways with this. Some students don’t know how to cook. This is how I will make the project happen. I have to talk to the principal (you!). I need to talk to a teacher to be the teacher watching us. I have to have a classroom. I have to get supplies. Other stuff also. Why is this important to me to happen? It’s important to me to happen because I love cooking. The students don’t know how to cook. This cooking class will help people learn how to cook. In conclusion, I think you will like my project. Challenger Track Meet! Zach, Glensha, Ryan, and Victoria created the first ever Challenger Mile Challenge to get kids in shape and allow them participate in a one mile run for prizes. Every participant got a certificate, and the top 3 got trophies!

Challenger Bully Free Zone! Sarah worked to make Challenger a bully free zone, creating posters and lessons for teachers to share with their classes so that Challenger would be a better place for everyone!

Challenger Choir! Chantel, Celeste, and DeAndre created a Challenger choir, with the help of Ms. Denault. They will be performing at fall festival, a parent's night, and possibly during future assemblies! Their choir currently allows more than 20 students to show their musical talent! Read below how they convinced the school to make this happen!
Dear Ms.Molina and Ms.Birrel, Our names are Deandre Goodloe, Celest Nunez, Chantel Weary. We are convincing you to have a choir. We are from Ms.Clark's class. We want to have our choir perform at fall festival. We will tell you how we are going to change our school, how we will we make the project happen, and why this is important to us. First, we are going to tell you how this will change our school. First of all we will influence people. They can try to be out going. We can have another club. This way, we won’t have the same clubs every year we can have an opportunity to improve our music skills. Lastly, we can get to know people. Next, we are going to tell you how the project will happen. We can go do a concert at fall festival. We can get the materials. We can do lots of flyers. Dear Challenger Teachers, Are you a guardian angel? Well, be one! My name is Chantel Weary and I am a guardian angel. Our class is trying to tell you to give people’s addresses for them to donate to St. Judes. We are doing this event at Challenger School. We are going to do this event as soon as possible. I will tell you about the reason why cancer is such an important disease to fight, tell you what are we doing as a class to help fight cancer, through the St. Jude’s up til’ dawn fundraiser, and tell you how you can help us. First, I will tell you about the reasons why cancers is such important disease to fight. It’s a disease characterized by unbelievable growth of abnormal cells. We are changing our lives, one day at a time. We start with ourselves, because it is impossible to make an impact, until we are the people we want to be!

Change YOURSELF! CHAMPION SELF CHANGER: DeAndre Goodloe

DeAndre is being recognized as a champion of being able to change himself. His goal was to change his anger, and not get frustrated as often. DeAndre worked hard to learn different strategies and has done a fantastic job of achieving his goal by thinking before he acts. Several of his teachers have reported the fantastic job he has done of becoming a mature citizen of the classroom, and controlling his actions.

BEFORE:
My change is to control my anger. Why I want to control my anger because I want every body not to be scared of me. This change will help me get more friends. The change will help the world by every body wont think I’m a bad person. I will talk to some people to help me with this change.

AFTER:
I did achieve my goal because I went three months without getting mad, and I made 4 new friends. How I did this was by getting help from my family and friends. They told me when I get mad I should count to ten. My friends helped me not get mad. I have more friends because I don’t get mad. I learned to count to ten, to take steps away, think about good stuff and not negative stuff. Well, it changed my life because now people are not scared of me. Now I am not marked the bad and mean guy. I am marked cool and nice. This changed my life and helped me be a better person.

Hussein Al-Helfee	I want to change my behavior by paying attention in class and not hanging out with people that get in trouble and staying on task. I will change my behavior by being a good student, paying attention, and I will do my homework. It will help me become a scientist and discover a cure for cancer.	I am achieving my goal sometimes. In some classes I do all my of work. I try to instead of getting in fights, think before I act. I think about things, and ask "is it worth it?" and then walk away. I am going to keep on working hard so I can make my goal come true.

Jaylon Keiser	My goal by the end of the year is to get a meets because I want to get a good grade and a better education so I can have a good job, a good house and a good life. If I be a lawyer I can help people in many ways. If I be a solider I can save thousands of lives’. If I be a doctor I could save millions of people every year. Getting an education will help me to get a better job	I think I am getting a MEETS in most of my classes. The way I am doing this is by paying attention in class. I am feeling that my goal is a good goal to do and that a lot of other people can achieve it as well. I think this is getting me a good education for when I grow up.
Janet Mondragon	I want to change myself so I am not shy around people. I want to change, not being shy to people so I could make new friends. Like for example, I would be able to answer people that keep asking me questions. I could make new friends. I will not be afraid or shy to talk to people. It would make me better because I would talk to people and so I could communication with them. I could give advice to people. It would change the world to be better because people who are shy could communicate with the community. I would talk to people every day and practice with my family every day. I would talk to my family and practice because I don’t talk to them much so that is my plan for all this year. Also being less shy would help me get a better job.	I think I achieved my goal because now I can talk to new people. I now talk more. I did this by practicing talking with my friends. It changed my life and made it great because I talk to people and I talk much more. I talk to teachers, but I still need help talking to teachers because I am a little shy to talk to teachers. In the future I will keep talking more and more. I am much less shy, and have a lot of new friends.
Chantel	To change myself, I am changing my writing, because my hand writing is sloppy. To help change myself, I am going to write in a journal. I am going to write really slowly. I am going to write everyday. I will not write fast. The reason I want to do this is because I want the teachers to read my hand writing. My plan is to write a sentence and see how my hand writing is. I could help by sending a letter to the president, so I can help the United States of America.	I did really good on my change yourself project. I always learn everytime when I write. I will tell you the tips I used: I wrote notes slowly on science and math, I wrote neatly, and I wrote essays slowly, and lots more. I can write letters to family, friends, and celebrities. Teachers can read my writing, and I can fill out an application for college. I am happy I changed myself and I am proud of myself.
Rey	I want to change my smart to smarter. I want to change how smart I am because I don’t think enough. I want to be smarter so I could help out people that need help. If I was smarter I would help the people in the hospital feel better and write them letters when it is Christmas or any of the holidays. I will help people when I pass college. I will get smarter. I will know how to help them with what they need help on. I will help them in any way they need help . I want to change from smart to smarter. I will change the world and help others.	I achieved my goal. I did alot of work helping others and getting smart. I read a lot, and I wrote a lot. It has changed my life by making me smarter. This changed me by helping me get smart so I can help others. I will keep studying alot. I will get good grades. I will pass all my classes and go to college.
Manuel	I want to get good grades because I don’t want to fail in any class. I don’t want to go back to 6th grade. I want to finish my homework on time . I want to finish early because I want to do not want to do more homework. I want to get better grades to try out for basketball or baseball . I want to get good grades to pass 7th grade. I want to help people with their homework. Good grades will help me go to college.	I am achieving my goal in some classes but not others. I am getting good grades by paying attention, not messing around, and writing alot. I am nervous about getting good grades, because I want to do well in math, writing, and reading. Good grades will help me go to college and get a job.
Alma	I want to change my grades because sometimes I get M’s. I think Ms are bad. I want to get Es because Es are good not bad. If I do my homework everyday, it will help make my grades better. If I get better grades on my homework, it will help me get better grades on my quizzes or tests. I want to be smart so I can be a teacher. Like this song I learned in 4th grade. OK here it comes… WORK HARD GET SMART WA WA……	I am doing good on my goal. I am studying more. I feel happy. I did all my homework every night. I am getting ready for the next grade. I am going to keep working and tell my parents to help me. I like my goal.
Roberto Mondragon	I can change my mean ways by being good to others. I can change by being friendly to others. I can change by helping other people. I can by coming down my madness. I want to change because some people get me mad when they talk back or when they think they are all that. I can make me a better person by being nice to others so I don’t get mad at others and get mean with people. I can have a better future in my life.	I am working on my goal sometimes. I have made new friends this year. Sometimes I am happy when I work on my goal. It is hard for me to work on my goal. I am going to keep working on my goal.
Gilberto	My goal is to stay out of trouble. I will work hard to get along with other people. I will have more friends if I do not get it trouble. I will do better in my classes if I’m not getting in trouble. I will be able to get a good job when I am older if I can get along with people and get good grades in school. If I get good grades and I am nice to people, people will look up to me and follow my examples.	I am achieving my goal by not getting into trouble. I am paying attention in class. I am getting better grades than I used to. School is more fun. I still want to do this in the future.
Lazaro Aldaco Atayde	My change is to stay out of trouble so I will not go to the principal. I will explain why, because people in school will think that you are mean to people if you don’t stay out of trouble. I would like to hang out with all people so that people think I am not mean to people and teachers. When I was in 6th grade I did not always do my Homework . I did not listen to the teacher when she was talking. I got sent out of the class and did not do my work. I will change so I am good in class and I stay out of trouble. If I change people will come to me for help.	I am doing good on my goal. I am doing my work. I do my notes. I am listening. Being good in class makes me feel good. This will help me so I can pass the 7th grade and go to 8th.
Glensha	I’m going to school right now to change my anger. I have really bad anger. If I can change I will be so happy. I would like to have counseling to help me better. If I work on my anger, It might help me be more patient with others. If I’m more patient with others I might be able to help them if they need help.

Vicente Araiza	I want to accomplish not getting into trouble so that I can do good and not get suspended. I won’t be in trouble and I won’t fight. I want to accomplish good grades in math. I always get into trouble and I won’t learn anything in math. So I want to try to pass math better than last year. I want to accomplish good grades in reading I don’t have a problem with now. I want to accomplish good grades in writing. I write sloppy sometimes, I write good sometimes . I want to accomplish good grades in all my classes so I can be smarter.	I am not getting into trouble like last year. I haven't been suspended for awhile. I am doing better than last year. I am getting better grades. I have memorized and learned fractions and I am doing better in math. I am being helpful in class and trying to get more things in my brain for AIMS and benchmarks. If I do good in school I will get a better job. If I keep working hard I can get an even better job.
Celeste Nunez	I hate that I get mad at my boy friend, mom, and my sister. I got mad at my boyfriend because of the thing he does. Thing like not calling me, not writing back to me on myspace, and not know that I like him a lot . I gat mad at my mom because I can’t use the phone a lot and I don’t gat what I want all the time. And last I get mad at my sisters because they go in to me room when I’m taking to people. Sometimes I’m happy and I get mad all of all of a sudden. When I get mad I stop talking to people and stop working and I get frustrated. When I stop talking to people I feel all ugly inside. I don’t want to feel ugly and bad and stop talking to people around me. If I stop getting mad all the time I will feel so much better. I will have a lot more time to work on the change the world project if I am not as angry as I was. If I am not angry I will be a good role model.	I achieved my goal partway. I know I did because I don't fight with my sister, and I don't get mad at my boyfriend. I worked at not getting mad by talking to people about problems. I learned how to control my anger. I practiced by listening. I have a bad habit of saying stuff back to people, like talking back. I learned to put my hand over my mouth or say things in my head to myself. It has helped me get into less trouble. I am happier because I do not get in as much trouble. I don' fight with people as much anymore. It will help me in the future by not quitting or by not throwing problems aside. I work through my problems now. I am happy I acheived my goal.
Sarah Houde	I would like to change one thing about myself and that is my temper. Sometimes I just want to hurt someone because they make me upset and I cant help it and I just want to stop. I want stop my temper so I can get along with my friends better.	I think I am not getting mad at people as often as I did. I am not getting angry at people because I am quiet when I am mad. I am sensitive. I feel happier now. I want to be happy and not act like I did when I was little.
Victoria	I want to change the way I am shy. I want to change the way I am so quiet in class. I think if I change the way I am so shy I will have more friends. I will be noticed by a lot of people. If I am nice and out going, I will be more like a leader. People will look up to me.	I did and didn't acheive my goal because I am still kinda shy to talk in other classes. I achieved it by talking to people outside. I said hi to more people. I still want to raise my hand in class. I think I still need to work on achieving my goal.

In September and October, we worked to make BIG CHANGES in the place where we spend most of our day! CHALLENGER SCHOOL is a great place to go, but we worked tirelessly to make it even better!

Clean Up Challenger Day! Alma and Tomi put on this event to make Challenger a more beautiful place to learn! More than 13 homerooms participated in the day long clean up, right before election day was held at our school!

Challenger Top 5 Reward Party: Rico, Vicente, and Rey created certificates and a reward party to recognize the top 5 students in each grade. They wanted to make sure that these students recieved recognition and also continued to be good leaders making positive choices.

Challenger Cooking Class! Janet led over 60 Challenger students, with the help of Ms. Gorzen, in learning how to cook! 3 seperate cooking classes were held to teach Challenger students to cook.

Challenger Track Meet! Zach, Glensha, Ryan, and Victoria created the first ever Challenger Mile Challenge to get kids in shape and allow them participate in a one mile run for prizes. Every participant got a certificate, and the top 3 got trophies!

Challenger Bully Free Zone! Sarah worked to make Challenger a bully free zone, creating posters and lessons for teachers to share with their classes so that Challenger would be a better place for everyone!
